A quick-thinking civilian driver recently assisted police officers during a high-speed pursuit in Abercwmboi, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Her immediate actions helped secure the arrest of a dangerous offender. The suspect, Jacob Roberts, has since been sentenced to one year and two months in prison.

Roberts, 25, from Mountain Ash, had led officers on a perilous chase. Police detected the smell of cannabis from his van, prompting the pursuit. He drove erratically, mounted pavements, and ignored multiple junctions. Moreover, he reverse-rammed a police vehicle twice and collided with parked cars and a building.

The chase concluded when Roberts drove into a dead-end street. He then abandoned his white van and attempted to escape on foot. PC Kerswell began a foot chase, but the suspect gained ground.

A red Nissan Micra suddenly pulled up alongside the officer. The unnamed female driver instructed him to “get in.” Bodycam footage captured the moment PC Kerswell accepted the unexpected offer. He directed her, and she promptly gave chase.

Upon spotting Roberts, the officer swiftly exited the vehicle. He deployed his Taser and apprehended the suspect. During a subsequent search, officers discovered two cannabis cigarettes on Roberts.

At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on September 16, Roberts pleaded guilty to numerous charges. These included dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, and driving without insurance. He also admitted failure to stop after an accident, criminal damage, and possession of Class B drugs.

PC Kerswell stated that Roberts showed complete disregard for all road users, including pedestrians. “It’s lucky that no one was seriously injured during this pursuit,” he commented. This unique intervention highlights how civilians can assist police in critical moments.

Roberts received a 14-month jail sentence for his offences. Additionally, he faces a three-year disqualification from driving. Authorities hope this sentence will serve as a strong deterrent and provide Roberts time for reflection.
