Renowned Irish actress Fiona Shaw has revealed how she nearly quit acting over a decade ago, experiencing profound career doubt. The acclaimed star of “Killing Eve” and the “Harry Potter” franchise once contemplated leaving the profession.

Shaw, now 68, shared that this challenging period occurred in 2013. At that time, she was performing in a New York stage adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novella, “The Testament Of Mary.” She candidly spoke about her emotional state during this engagement.

Running between performances one day, she noticed her name displayed on the theatre sign. However, she experienced a profound lack of emotion. “I felt no joy,” she explained, “I just felt tired.”

This moment of despair, when Fiona Shaw nearly quit acting, led her to seriously consider a career change. She mused, “I thought I might stop acting and teach.” This sentiment marks a stark contrast to her widely celebrated career trajectory.

Indeed, Shaw is globally recognized for her compelling roles. She famously played the cold Aunt Petunia Dursley in the “Harry Potter” films. Later, her portrayal of MI6 officer Carolyn Martens in “Killing Eve” earned her a Bafta TV Award in 2019.

Currently, Shaw is involved in a new project. She portrays Mrs Jennings, a wealthy widower and eager matchmaker, in the upcoming Dolly Alderton film adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense And Sensibility.” The actress stars alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in the period drama.

She expressed admiration for her younger co-star. Shaw described Edgar-Jones as a “lovely, enchanting girl.” Moreover, she noted Edgar-Jones possesses qualities she lacked at that age, specifically the ability to “withhold” on camera.

By contrast, Shaw recalled her own early career approach. In her late 20s, she confessed to being overtly eager, wanting to showcase everything. It took considerable time, she admitted, to grasp the camera’s preference for subtlety. “I’ve got it now, I think,” she concluded.

Reflecting on her journey, Shaw feels her life has exceeded all expectations. Despite her prominence in film and television, she views herself as “quite ordinary.” She playfully describes herself as a “young old person.”

Her long career includes multiple prestigious accolades. She won Olivier awards, notably as Actress of the Year in 1989/1990 for performances in “Electra,” “As You Like It,” and “The Good Person Of Sichuan.” Additionally, she secured the best actress gong in 1994 for her role in “Machinal” at the National Theatre.
