James Maddison marked his long-awaited return to the Tottenham starting lineup with a spectacular goal on Monday evening. This marked his first appearance from the whistle in 18 months. The British playmaker, aged 29, has endured a significant period of injury setbacks. He previously tore his ACL during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle, complicating a pre-existing knee issue.
Maddison received the nod for the home fixture against newly-promoted Coventry. The match took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He wasted no time making an impact on the game. Indeed, he needed only 14 minutes to find the back of the net.
Mohammed Kudus delivered a lateral pass to Maddison. He struck the ball first time, unleashing a superb curled effort. The shot sailed beyond Carl Rushworth’s reach. It nestled perfectly into the top-right corner.
Maddison celebrated with restraint. However, his teammates offered immediate adulation. They understood the immense physical and mental challenges he had faced. This stunning finish meant James Maddison scores on return to the starting lineup, a moment celebrated by all.
Manager De Zerbi spoke about Maddison’s future ahead of the match. He anticipates exponential improvement as the player gains more minutes. De Zerbi stated there are players “able to be important even if they play 10-15-20 minutes and James is one player like this.” This highlights Maddison’s immediate value to the squad.
Meanwhile, another long-term absentee also rejoined the squad. Dejan Kulusevski was named in the matchday squad for the first time since May 2025. He has been recovering from a complex patella injury. Kulusevski is now poised to make his first competitive appearance of the season.
