Dame Judi Dench, the celebrated British actress, has regrettably announced that her worsening eyesight has now rendered her unable to continue her illustrious acting career. This heartbreaking news means the veteran performer can no longer take on stage roles or film projects.
The acclaimed actress, aged 91, was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012. This progressive condition severely impacts her central vision. Consequently, it has gradually made everyday tasks increasingly difficult for her.
Speaking publicly, Dame Judi stated, “I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play anymore. I can’t do a film anymore. I can’t read anymore.” She confessed to interviewer Emma Barnett that she struggles to recognise faces. Therefore, she often approaches the wrong people, leading to awkward, unintended embraces.
Furthermore, the star expressed profound sadness at being unable to fully appreciate nature. She recounted missing the sight of bluebells this past summer. However, she draws comfort from her memory and what she can still discern.
When questioned about aging, Dame Judi dismissively called it “rubbish.” She advised against overthinking it. Moreover, she advocates for maintaining an active lifestyle, despite any physical limitations. Her mother also suffered from the same condition.
This impact on Dame Judi Dench’s eyesight has been a gradual process. She previously gave up driving several years ago due to her deteriorating vision. She described stopping driving as one of the most traumatic moments of her life, citing safety concerns.
According to medical experts, AMD is a common ailment that does not cause total blindness. Nevertheless, it profoundly hinders activities like reading and facial recognition. Dame Judi’s career spans seven decades. During this time, she has garnered numerous accolades, including an Oscar, two Golden Globes, and six Baftas. Her iconic portrayal of M in the James Bond franchise, which she debuted in 1995, brought her global recognition.
